The story

The Kosterlitz Crack is a small legend in Italian climbing: a 7a hand crack (about V+/6a+ on the classic British scale) on the Sergent slab in Valle dell'Orco (Gran Paradiso Park). Named after J. Michael Kosterlitz — British physicist, Nobel laureate and strong climber — who free-climbed it in the 1970s, opening an era of Yosemite-style crack climbing in Italy. It is one of the most beautiful and logical cracks in the western Alps: clean, vertical, with a repeated and precise hand-jam movement. To battle it is to confront the history of granite climbing and one of the most iconic places of Piedmontese alpinism.
