The story
A Monviso classic: crossing the "Buco di Viso" — the first alpine tunnel in history, dug in 1480 by the Marquisate of Saluzzo to favour salt trade with France — and ascent toward the peaks of the Italian side: Pointe de Venise/Punta Venezia and Pointe d'Udine/Punta Udine, with sweeping views of Monviso (3,841 m). The base is Rifugio Quintino Sella al Monviso or Rifugio Vitale Giacoletti, with descent option to Pian del Re, the spring of the river Po. A route that blends alpinism, medieval industrial archaeology, and the charm of one of Italy's most iconic mountains. A full-moon night on the Viso is a memory that stays.
