The story
Ski touring on Monte Ruissas (2,797 m), on the Italy–France watershed ridge of upper Val Varaita. A long but steady ascent from the valley floor at Chianale, crossing centuries-old larches, alpine pastures and snowy ridges. From the summit the view spans Monviso, the French Ubaye valley, and the entire Queyras massif. On spring corn-snow days the descent offers wide, enjoyable slopes with technical variants toward Rifugio Melezè. A historic border area: the Maddalena pass and surrounding cols saw Roman, Napoleonic, and Italian Resistance transits.
