Location

The story

Winter ski version of Pizzo d'Ormea: the skin track starts at Rifugio Quarzina or Mettolo Castellino and winds up through the wide karst cirque that defines the peak. The Ligurian Alps, just a short distance from the Mediterranean, have a distinctive microclimate: abundant but brief snowfalls, rapid temperature swings, and frequently corn-style snow that suits skiing. The summit slope is steep and demands attention to snowpack stability; the descent into the cirque is wide and flowing, with a second loop possible on Monte Mongioie. One of the southernmost peaks in Italy where high-quality ski mountaineering is practiced.
