Location

The story

Pizzo d'Ormea (2,476 m at the main peak, reaching 2,686 m in the higher subgroup) is the iconic summit of the Ligurian Alps in the Cuneo area: a limestone-dolomite bastion rising from the sea of beech forests of the Monregalese region. In summer, the climb from Rifugio Quarzina or Mettolo Castellino crosses rocky meadows, karst sinkholes and steep grassy slopes. The rock is friable in places and demands sure footing, but the view rewards the effort: from the summit you can see — in one sweep — the Mediterranean, the Alpine chain up to Monviso, and the Ligurian Sea. The tour also includes nearby Monte Mongioie, a peak of similar character. An experience that captures the charm of high-altitude karst terrain, rarely found this far south in the Alps.
