The story
Rocca Castello (2,944 m) rises above the Val Varaita like a granite fortress, next to the pyramid of Monviso. It is one of the classic destinations of southern Piedmont: the approach starts from the valley floor at Chianale, climbing through larch forests and high-altitude pastures along a trail that turns into an easy rocky ridge up to the summit. From the top, the view sweeps across the Cottian Alps, the French Ubaye massif, and — on clear days — all the way to the Ligurian coast. The hike also takes in neighbouring Monte Faraut and Monte Ruissas, creating a panoramic traverse along the Italy–France watershed ridge. Sturdy trekking boots are required, with a few exposed sections that demand attention.
