The journey

From Peaks to River: An Adventure of Rock, Van, and Kayak

A journey born under the banner of freedom and exploration. After tackling the majestic vertical walls of Savoy, the adventure shifted shape: traveling in our van, we reached the river, where we traded our climbing shoes for paddles. For two days and 36 km, we navigated through pristine nature, paddling into the heart of a spectacular gorge surrounded by towering karst formations. An unforgettable experience of total connection with the elements.

Detailed itinerary

From peaks to river: rock, van and kayak

A journey born under the banner of freedom and exploration, one that changed
shape along the way: from the vertical walls of Savoie to the green waters of
the Gorges de l'Ardèche.

The walls of Savoie

It all began vertically. For the first few days we took on the great limestone
walls of Savoie: climbing shoes on, hands on the rock, eyes always a little
higher. A handful of intense days — just enough to let the mountain get under
our skin — and then the urge to change element took over.

From the van to the river

We loaded everything into our van, left the mountains behind and headed south,
all the way to the river. There we swapped climbing shoes for a paddle: the
same hunger for adventure, in a completely different form.

Day 1 — From Vallon-Pont-d'Arc to the bivouac

The descent starts at Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, the gateway to the gorges. After
the first, slightly clumsy strokes, the Pont d'Arc appears: a natural stone
arch over fifty metres wide that the river carved by itself. Paddling beneath
it is the moment that stays with you.

From there the real descent begins: calm stretches where you simply let the
current carry you alternate with small rapids that pull out a grin (and a few
splashes). The canyon closes in, the noise of the world disappears, and all
that's left is rock, sun and water. In the evening we reach the authorised
bivouac
inside the nature reserve: a tent, a simple dinner, and a sky full
of stars with no light around.

Day 2 — The wild heart of the gorges

The second day is the finest. The central section of the gorges is the most
remote: no roads, no villages, just sheer cliffs, towering karst formations,
caves opening in the walls and birds of prey gliding overhead. You paddle,
stop to swim in the quieter bends, and have lunch on a pebble beach.

The finish is downstream, near Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche: two days and
around 36 km
of water in all, and the feeling of having lived the river
from the inside.

In short

From rock to water, a journey in two acts: a few days of climbing in Savoie,
then the canoe descent of the Gorges de l'Ardèche. A perfect weekend for
anyone after nature, a touch of adventure and real silence — the descent is
within reach of anyone comfortable in a canoe and up for a challenge. Late
spring is the ideal time, when the river still runs full and the gorges
aren't crowded.
